Bastrop - “Most Historic Small Town in Texas”

The City of Bastrop is the county seat and commercial center of Bastrop County Texas, located in the “Heart of the Colorado.” It was founded in 1832. Bastrop, Texas is located 30 miles southeast of Austin at the intersection of State Highways 21, 71 and 95, only 22 miles from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The population of Bastrop city as of July 2004, according to the Bureau of the Census, is 7,006.

It is characterized by deep green pine forests, and one of the region’s most popular recreational lakes, Lake Bastrop. Bastrop boasts three beautiful golf courses; two state parks and quiet neighborhoods nestled in the woods.

Attractive for Industry and Commerce

The area’s growing biotech industry includes M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center, the University of Texas Veterinary Science Park, BioCrest/Stratagene, The Coghlan Group and Cenetron Diagnostics. Minerals produced in Bastrop County include clay, oil, gas and lignite. Livestock, corn, sorghum, pecans and peanuts are principal sources of agricultural income.

The Arts & Entertainment in the Bastrop Community

Bastrop holds dear to its heart one of the oldest Opera Houses in Texas that is currently active. In Bastrop's historical district, gift and antique stores embellish Main Street, as well as historical homes add charm and character in and around downtown. Chestnut Square is the new family entertainment center with movie theatres, bowling, miniature golf and an arcade room. There are two state parks, Bastrop State Park and Beuscher State Park, which add a lot of family fun such as fishing, hiking, swimming, canoeing; perfect for the nature lover at heart. In town there is also a walking trail from Fisherman's Park to the other end of downtown Bastrop. Bed and Breakfast Inns along with hotels and motels provide visitor accommodations. As far as nightlife goes in Bastrop, there is the Genuine Oyster Bar. It is a local hot spot that has been around for ages which features live music certain days of the week. There are many delicious mom and pop restaurants scattered throughout the town to meet all your dining requests.

The city of Bastrop is part of Bastrop Independent School District, which covers grades PK-12th grade. There are approximately 7,254 students dispersed in twelve schools.

Bastrop Texas Real Estate Growth

The Highway 71 corridor from Austin’s Bergstrom International Airport is experiencing explosive real estate growth. Hunter’s Crossing, a mixed-use development on Highway 71, is the site of Home Depot, Chili’s Restaurant, a retail strip center, and a new residential development that will include 465 homes and as many as 700 apartments. Pecan Crossing is a 148-acre mixed use development on Highway 71 at Hwy 304 that will offer 1,000,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, and other activities. A new family entertainment complex, Chestnut Square Family Entertainment Center, located at Loop 150 and Highway 95, opened in 2003 with a 4-screen theater with stadium seating, a 16 lane bowling alley, high-tech arcade, nine-table billiard parlor, a food court, and banquet facilities. Bastrop Village, a 750-acre project south of Texas 71 that straddles County Road 20, plans to build up to 985 homes. The Colony, an existing gated community located just north of Hwy 71 between FM 1209 and FM 969, plans to build another 4,000 homes. Woodbine Development Corp of Dallas is developing a Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa that includes a 500-room hotel, equestrian trails and two golf courses to be located on 600 acres near McKinney Roughs Nature Park north of Hwy 71. The Hyatt is projecting to bring at least 400,000 new tourists into the area. The Hyatt Resort and Spa is an enormous corporation and we are honored to be a part of their plans!
