Elgin - “Sausage Capital of Texas”The city of Elgin was established in 1854, and named for Robert Morris Elgin, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad land commissioner. Elgin is conveniently located on Hwy. 290, just 19 miles east of Austin, 30 minutes from Austin Bergstrom International Airport and downtown Austin, within 90 miles of San Antonio, 125 miles of Houston and 180 miles of Dallas. Long ago Elginites decided sausage was definitely more flavorful and easier on the teeth. Four companies now try to keep Texas supplied with "hot guts". The Texas Legislature named Elgin as the "Sausage Capital of Texas." Elgin has a few major festivals every year such as the Western, Hogeye, Holiday by the Tracks. The wide main street and many historic brick buildings (they made bricks, remember?) have provided movie companies with a backdrop for contemporary and period films.
