Manor is an incorporated community on U.S. Highway 290 twelve miles northeast of Austin and eleven miles West of Elgin in northeastern Travis County. The population of Manor as of July 03 was 4,655. The coverage of land in the city of Manor is 1.1 square miles. Manor is a quaint little town with all the joys of the big city of Austin only twelve miles away.

Manor's History

The community's post office had been named Grassdale around 1859 with James Manor as the postmaster. Discontinued in 1860, a new post office named Gregg, Texas opened in 1871. The following year the name was changed to honor the original postmaster, James Manor.

The Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in 1871 and Manor's population grew to 125. By 1892 there were 500 Manorites and 900 in 1914. Manor reached 1,000 residents, just as the Great Depression was being felt. The population declined to 654 residents. The population of Manor rose (slightly) to 688 in the 1940s. In 1988 Manor had 1,233 citizens and by 1990 it was reported as 1,041.

Manor is the best of a small town with big city conveniences nearby. Austin is only twelve miles away with anything a person might desire easily accessible for quiet country living. Manor is located in beautiful central Texas’ rolling hills and strong oaks.

Manor, Texas was the filming location for 1993 movie, "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" It was the perfect place for the hit movie.

The city of Manor is in Travis County. Manor Independent School District covers grades PK-12th. There are approximately 3,020 numbers of students in six schools.
